THE CHAPEL OF SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA: A JEWEL OF VICEREGAL ART IN AREQUIPA
La Capilla, fue originalmente la sacristía de la Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús. Es considerada una joya del arte virreinal andino y conocida como la “Sixtina de Arequipa” por su belleza artística y espiritual.
Destaca por su cúpula imponente y murales policromados que representan un entorno tropical inspirado en las Misiones Jesuíticas, con flores, aves y frutos exóticos. Los murales, hechas con la técnica del temple al seco, conservan sus colores vivos. En las pechinas aparecen los cuatro Evangelistas, y sobre el friso, varios santos mártires, reforzando el carácter devocional del espacio.
La capilla alberga un aguamanil de piedra con una figura antropomorfa y una colección de orfebrería religiosa. Sobresalen lienzos como “La Visión de la Storta” de Diego de la Puente y obras del jesuita Bernardo Bitti, entre ellas “Las Lágrimas de San Pedro”, “La Virgen de la Candelaria” y “Cristo Resucitado”.
En la antesala lienzos de la escuela cusqueña, destacando el retrato del matrimonio de Don Martín de Loyola y Doña Beatriz Clara Coya, símbolo del mestizaje cultural entre españoles e indígenas.
La capilla es un testimonio del sincretismo cultural, la espiritualidad jesuítica y el esplendor artístico del virreinato en el sur del Perú. Hoy es uno de los espacios más representativos del patrimonio histórico y religioso de Arequipa.
The chapel was originally the sacristy of the Church of the Society of Jesus. It is considered a jewel of Andean viceregal art and is known as the “Sistine Chapel of Arequipa” because of its artistic and spiritual beauty.
It stands out for its impressive dome and polychrome murals depicting a tropical environment inspired by the Jesuit Missions, with flowers, birds, and exotic fruits. The murals, painted using the dry tempera technique, still preserve their vivid colors. The pendentives feature the Four Evangelists, while the frieze depicts several martyr saints, reinforcing the devotional character of the space.
The chapel houses a stone lavabo with an anthropomorphic figure and a collection of religious silverwork. Outstanding paintings include The Vision of La Storta by Diego de la Puente and works by the Jesuit artist Bernardo Bitti, among them The Tears of Saint Peter, The Virgin of Candelaria, and The Risen Christ.
In the antechamber are paintings from the Cusco School, including the portrait of Don Martín de Loyola and Doña Beatriz Clara Coya, a symbol of the cultural blending between Spaniards and Indigenous peoples.
The chapel is a testimony to cultural syncretism, Jesuit spirituality, and the artistic splendor of the Viceroyalty in southern Peru. Today, it is one of the most representative spaces of Arequipa’s historical and religious heritage.
