LOS CLAUSTROS DE LA COMPAÑÍA DE JESÚS

THE CLOISTERS OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS

The cloisters are among the most outstanding works of Peruvian mestizo Baroque architecture, built entirely from volcanic ashlar stone (ignimbrite), typical of the region.

Construction began in 1578 under the Jesuits and, after the earthquake of 1582, the structure was rebuilt. The current complex was erected between 1677 and 1738 under the direction of Lorenzo de Pantigoso. During colonial times, the College of Santiago and the Jesuit Juniorate operated there.

Following the Jesuits’ expulsion in 1767, the cloisters passed to the Oratorian Fathers of Saint Philip Neri, who used them as a hospice and shelter. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the complex deteriorated until its restoration in 1971 and its declaration as a Historical Monument in 1972.

The complex features three interconnected courtyards with arches and Tuscan columns, decorated with European and Andean symbols such as grapes, flowers, cantuta blossoms, shells, papayas, cherubs, and gargoyles shaped like pumas. At the center of the Main Cloister stands an ornamental fountain.

It is a masterpiece of Andean viceregal art and a symbol of the cultural heritage of Arequipa and Peru, reflecting the fusion of the Andean and European worlds.
