THE ORIGINS OF THE CHURCH OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS IN AREQUIPA
El Templo de la Compañía de Jesús de Arequipa fue diseñado por Gaspar Báez en 1578, pero su primera estructura se derrumbó en el terremoto de 1582. Posteriormente, el jesuita Diego Felipe reconstruyó el edificio manteniendo el diseño original. Una tercera construcción se inició en 1650 y fue ampliada por Simón de Barrientos, aunque el terremoto de 1687 volvió a dañarlo. La versión definitiva fue dirigida por Agustín de Acosta S.J. y concluida en 1698, fecha grabada en su fachada. A lo largo del tiempo, sismos como los de 1868, 1960 y 1979 afectaron su estructura, pero el templo ha sido restaurado respetando sus planos originales, conservando su valor como una obra emblemática del barroco mestizo andino.
The Church of the Society of Jesus in Arequipa was designed by Gaspar Báez in 1578, but its first structure collapsed during the earthquake of 1582. Later, the Jesuit Diego Felipe rebuilt the church while preserving the original design. A third construction phase began in 1650 and was expanded by Simón de Barrientos, although the earthquake of 1687 damaged it once again.
The final version was directed by Agustín de Acosta, S.J., and completed in 1698, the date engraved on its façade. Over time, earthquakes such as those of 1868, 1960, and 1979 affected the structure, but the church has been restored while respecting its original plans, preserving its value as an emblematic masterpiece of Andean mestizo Baroque architecture.
