El Altar mayor
Nos encontramos ante el retablo barroco más bello de Arequipa, compuesto por tres cuerpos horizontales y tres calles verticales, íntegramente tallado en madera y dorado con láminas de oro. En el primer cuerpo destaca un cuadro de la Virgen con el Niño, una de las obras más destacadas del pintor jesuita Bernardo Bitti, realizada a fines del siglo XVI. A la derecha se ubica la imagen de San Francisco de Borja, tercer Superior General de la Compañía de Jesús, quien envió a los primeros jesuitas al Perú en 1568. Al lado opuesto se encuentra San Ignacio de Loyola fundador de la Compañía de Jesús. Segundo cuerpo, las imágenes de San Estanislao de Kostka con el Niño Jesús en brazos, y San Juan Berchmans. En el centro resplandece un sol con el monograma IHS, emblema de la Compañía de Jesús, y coronando el conjunto, la imponente imagen del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, patrono del templo.
En el muro izquierdo del presbiterio se encuentra un gran cuadro de la Sagrada Familia, que en su parte superior muestra una visión de la Pasión. En el muro derecho, otro lienzo de gran formato representa a la familia de la Virgen.
A la derecha del Altar Mayor tenemos el del Señor Crucificado, en él encontramos la imagen más bella de todo el templo, un San Sebastián atravesado de flechas.
Al frente el Altar llamado de los fundadores. Destaca una gran imagen se Santiago Peregrino, e imágenes de santos fundadores como los santos Agustín, Francisco, Domingo, Juan de Dios y Pedro Nolasco.
The Main Altar
We stand before the most beautiful Baroque altarpiece in Arequipa. It is composed of three horizontal levels and three vertical sections, entirely carved in wood and covered with gold leaf.
At the center of the first level is a painting of the Virgin and Child, considered one of the most important works of the Jesuit painter Bernardo Bitti, created at the end of the 16th century. To the right stands the image of Saint Francis Borgia, the third Superior General of the Society of Jesus, who sent the first Jesuits to Peru in 1568. On the opposite side is Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus.
The second level features the images of Saint Stanislaus Kostka holding the Infant Jesus, and Saint John Berchmans. At the center shines a radiant sunburst bearing the IHS monogram, the emblem of the Society of Jesus. Crowning the entire ensemble is the imposing statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, patron of the church.
On the left wall of the presbytery hangs a large painting of the Holy Family, topped by a vision of the Passion of Christ. On the right wall, another large-format canvas depicts the Family of the Virgin Mary.
To the right of the High Altar is the Altar of the Crucified Lord, home to what is considered the most beautiful sculpture in the church: a statue of Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows.
Facing it is the Altar of the Founders, featuring a large statue of Saint James the Pilgrim alongside images of founding saints such as Saints Augustine, Francis, Dominic, John of God, and Peter Nolasco.
